European Commission Announces New Defence Industry Investments for Companies in Pirkanmaa
The European Commission has allocated more than €1 billion (€1.07 billion) to 57 defence industry projects through the European Defence Fund (EDF). The investments aim to strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities and strategic autonomy across a range of defence and security domains, with a particular focus on supporting research and development. Now that the selected projects have been announced, the Commission aims to sign grant agreements with the consortia developing the solutions by the end of the year.
Finnish organisations are well represented among the funded projects. Finnish companies and higher education institutions are involved in a total of 12 consortia that have been selected for funding. Several organisations based in the Pirkanmaa region are participating in these consortia, including VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, optronics manufacturer Senop Oy, protective equipment manufacturer FY-Composites Oy, and smart technology developer Insta ILS Oy. Congratulations to all involved!
The most significant individual investment from a Finnish perspective was a €79 million allocation to the FAMOUS3 consortium, coordinated by Patria and involving seven other Finnish defence industry companies. The FAMOUS project, which aims to enhance European land combat capabilities, has received more than €100 million in funding from the European Union since 2021.
